New code of practice on collecting and using customers’ information online
30/07/2010 07:33
Businesses looking to make the most of their website and comply with the law will welcome a new code of practice produced by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
The ICO code explains how the Data Protection Act 1998 applies to the collection and use of personal data online. It provides good practice for organisations that do business or provide services online, and covers activities such as:
- collecting customer details through an online application form
- using cookies or IP addresses to target content at individuals
- using personal data to market goods
- using cloud computing to process personal data.
The code explains the privacy risks that may arise when operating online, and suggests ways firms can deal with them. It stresses the importance of treating consumers’ information properly, and being transparent about how their information is used. The code covers topics including online marketing, operating internationally, and applying individuals’ rights in an online environment.
The ICO has also produced a best-practice checklist for small businesses.
