Increase in national minimum wage confirmed
30/07/2010 07:34
Employers need to prepare for the changes to the national minimum wage (NMW) that will take effect from October, as the Coalition Government has now published draft regulations implementing the measures previously announced in April.
The adult rate rises from £5.80 to £5.93 an hour; the development rate for 18- to 20-year-olds is increased from £4.83 to £4.92 an hour; and the rate for 16- to 17-year-olds is increased from £3.57 to £3.64 an hour.
A significant change, announced last year, is that the adult rate will apply to workers aged 21 and over, rather than the current age of 22.
The rate for the accommodation offset is increased to £32.27 per week (£4.61 per day).
In addition, from October 2010, there will be a new minimum wage of £2.50 per hour for apprentices who are either under 19 or in the first year of their apprenticeship (ie those currently exempt from NMW).
